Constructed in 1996, the terminal consists of a single concourse
with five gates, four luggage
carousels, a special ski/snowboard slide, two TSA screening lanes,
a restaurant and a gift shop.
In March 2010, the federal TSA approved a $4.6 million grant to
improve the baggage handling area
with equipment that screens bags for explosives quickly while
streamlining ticketing and boarding passengers. The new facility
eliminates the need for passengers to walk checked baggage to
a
screening location before going to a security checkpoint. The new
facility will become a part of an
80,000-square-foot terminal facility serving more than 200,000
people a year, most of them skiers headed for nearby Vail,
Colo.
Plans for the new baggage handling facility included a
17,700-square-foot standing-seam metal
roof that would have to match the Hartford Green color of an
existing standing-seam roof installed
on the terminal in 2008. Airport officials chose the same Series
1200 standing-seam profile from
Englert Inc. that had been selected for the original roof. The
terminal roof and new baggage handling facility roof were both
coated in Kynar 500, creating
a perfect match. The new roof was installed along with a custom,
box-style gutter and more than 2,700 square feet of 26-gauge flush
seam soffit.
