The largest
suburban city in the Kansas City metropolitan area, Overland Park,
Kan., waited more than 20 years to build a convention center
complex. The resulting Overland Park Convention Center and attached
Sheraton Hotel provides exceptional exhibit space and sets new
standards in the hospitality industry.
Architectural firm, DLR Group, Overland Park, was challenged to
provide individual identities to the two facilities while keeping
them joined as a single destination complex.
"The design was of
an iconic nature-intended to become a symbol of Overland Park,"
said Ken Martin, project manager. "We wanted to provide a reflected
view of the city while outwardly drawing people in to the
complex."
The project used more than 35,000 square feet (3,252 m2) of
Citadel Architectural Products' Envelope 2000 metal composite
material panels in Seafoam Green to tie the two buildings together
and provide a contemporary feel throughout the complex. The panels
are used on both facilities and interface with brick on the
convention center and cast stone modules on the hotel. They were
attached using Citadel's progressive Reveal System.
"The Citadel
panels augment the contemporary yet timeless feel of the design,"
Martin said. "And from a practical standpoint, the panels provide a
long service life with low maintenance. Plus, their light weight
required much less structural support."
According to
Martin, the Reveal System cost significantly less than other
attachment systems that were considered. The convention center
features 237,000 square feet (22,017 m2) of exhibit space, meeting/
multipurpose areas and ballroom space. The attached 412-room
Sheraton Hotel has 25,000 square feet (2,323 m2) of additional
meeting space. The convention center also features 1,400 free
parking spaces, 400 of which are covered; in-house food and
beverage; a cyber café; high-speed Internet access; eight bay
loading docks and elephant doors; and exquisite art throughout the
facility.
Designers integrated a 25,000-square-foot (2,323-m2) outdoor
courtyard between the hotel and convention center with an open-air
walkway between the two.
