The city employees of Ann Arbor have a new office thanks to the
municipal building designed by architect of record, Quinn Evans
Architects, Ann Arbor.
This multi-phased project included a new
court-police building, partial renovation of the existing city
hall, as well as associated site work to create public plazas and
gardens. The new building was designed to achieve LEED Gold
certification. The design team selected metal as one of the
sustainable materials to be used. The facility is clad in 16,420
square feet of metal wall panels from ATAS International Inc. The
majority of the installation includes 20-gauge Rigid-Wall (MFR160)
panels in Dove Grey, Silversmith and a custom Chromium Grey. Also
used were 20-gauge Belvedere (BWR360) panels in Dove Grey.
The panel colors were chosen to reduce the scale of the building
and add visual interest. Kenneth Clein, AIA LEED AP, a principal
with Quinn Evans Architects, says: "Because of this, the building
appearance changes at different times of the year and day-it's
really quite nice. The idea for the random looking pattern came
from Trung Le, the design architect from OWP/P Cannon. He felt it
symbolized the diversity of the community. We think it speaks to
the progressive nature of the Ann Arbor community."
