Metal allows sustainable corporate campus to stand out in Pittsburgh community

With the high demand for nuclear power, the
Westinghouse Electric Co. has moved its headquarters to an office
park development in Cranberry Township, north of Pittsburgh. As the
largest Class A build-to-suit office building in Pennsylvania
history, the Westinghouse campus is home to three distinct
buildings totaling 960,000 square feet. Pittsburgh-based
architectural firm IKM focused on creating a sustainable series of
modern buildings that would distinguish the Westinghouse
headquarters from other office and retail spaces in the area. As a
result, the designers used Moon Township, Pa.-based CENTRIA's
Formawall Dimension Series panels in Light Gray and Midnight Bronze
to give each of the three buildings a contemporary feel with a
subdued silver and bronze sheen. In addition, the durability of
CENTRIA's panels ensures the campus will maintain its contemporary
and polished look despite the barrage of Pennsylvania's harshest
elements.
The nearly 1 million-square-foot campus was planned and
constructed in phases, with Building 1 completed as part of the
initial phase, and opened for occupancy in June 2009. Buildings 2
and 3 were built during the second phase, which concluded in
2010.
The use of metal gives a contemporary and modern look to the
headquarters of a company that has been in business since 1886. The
Pennsylvania campus serves not only as a corporate headquarters to
Westinghouse, but also acts as a global headquarters for
Westinghouse's overseas interests which include plants in South
America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
CENTRIA's panels also play a key role in making the
buildings energy efficient and sustainable by combining thermal
efficiency and moisture control into a single panel component.
Meanwhile, the second and third buildings use CENTRIA's Profile
Series Exposed Fastener Super-Rib with MicroSeam Corners and
Econolap 1/2-inch to create a polished yet energy-efficient design.
The energy-efficient campus has achieved LEED Certified designation
with the Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council.
Each of the three campus buildings serves to centralize key
Westinghouse services in one location. Building 1 is designed to
accommodate 1,700 people, and has ample space for workstations,
meeting rooms and private offices. Building 1 also contains large,
communal spaces including laboratories, a fitness room, graphics
department, cafeteria, kitchen, food court, auditoriums and private
dining rooms.
To break up the color scheme in Building 1, CENTRIA provided
60,223 square feet of its 20/20-gauge, 2-inch horizontal Formawall
Dimension Series panels in Light Gray with an embossed Duracast
coating, as well as 16,993 square feet of the 20/20-gauge, 2-inch
horizontal Formawall Dimension Series panels in Midnight Bronze
with a smooth Flourofinish coating. To help ensure an
energy-efficient design, CENTRIA supplied 15,002 square feet of its
20-gauge Profile Series Exposed Fastener Profiles Super-Rib with
Microseam Corners and Louvers in Midnight Bronze with a smooth
Flourofinish coating. Building 1 also features 15,397 square feet
of CENTRIA's 20-gauge Liner Panels L2-3 in Arctic Ice with a smooth
Polyester coating.
Buildings 2 and 3 have space for approximately 1,000 employees,
along with space for workstations, meeting rooms and private
offices. CENTRIA provided 63,004 square feet of its horizontal
20/20-gauge, 2-inch horizontal Formawall Dimension Series panels in
Light Gray with an embossed Duracast coating, as well as 19,241
square feet of its 20/20-gauge, 2-inch horizontal Formawall
Dimension Series, panels in Midnight Bronze with a smooth
Flourofinish coating. Buildings 2 and 3 also feature 5,336 square
feet of CENTRIA's 24-gauge, 1/2-inch Profile Series Exposed
Fastener Econolap in Midnight Bronze with a smooth Flourofinish
coating, along with CENTRIA's Profile Series Super-Rib Louvers.
