One of the first homes to be built in the notable Washington
Hall area, is a domed house that is modeled in part on Thomas
Jefferson's Monticello and in part on the famed Chiswick House in
London. The house was built by Judge John Daniels in 1913 and is
part of the Whitland neighborhood, which is designated as a
conservation zone district. The district encompasses diverse
architectural styles representing the most popular residential
housing styles of the early 20th century.
The 5,000-square-foot standing-seam roof is original to the
building and has been coated approximately three times by R.D.
Herbert & Sons. The latest application included pressure
washing the existing roof, repairing damaged panels and EPDM, and
installing new roof vents. The new roof coating encapsulates a
reinforcement fabric between the two layers of sealant membrane,
followed by two additional coats of elastomeric membrane, creating
an impervious finished surface protecting the residence. R.D.
