Personality was bestowed on a parking garage connected to the five-story Franciscan Medical Building at St. Joseph Medical Center with customized metal panels. Dri-Design used Perforated Imaging technology on approximately 3,500 square feet of 0.08-aluminum panels with Clear Anodized, Melon Yellow, MBX Car Orange and Plum Kuchen finishes that were installed on the parking garage.

The garage is located along a pedestrian corridor. Large images of people and other graphics with light and dark areas were formed on the exterior of the 819-stall facility by varying the size, location and density of perforations in the metal panels. Studio SC worked with Perkins + Will to craft the graphics for the metal panels.

Aldrich & Associates, the general contractor for the medical building and garage, installed the panels. George Ward, senior project manager, says the timeline to select the artwork was tight, and Dri-Design assisted in obtaining images with proper resolution for reproduction.

"The actual installation of the panels was pretty straightforward," Ward says. "Dri-Design met all of the deadlines-everything went together like clockwork."

Brad Hinthorne, managing principal at Perkins + Will, architect of record, says the City of Tacoma had specific guidelines for the pedestrian corridor regarding signage and graphics. Several public meetings were held to get input and discuss design alternatives. "We wanted imagery that would somewhat mitigate the scale of the garage while speaking to the history of the community and involving local people," Ward says.
