PBS Satellite Operations Center, Alexandria, Va.

Trespa International B.V.'s rainscreen assembly with a Euro Fox support system eliminated work at the wall's interior face on the PBS Satellite Operations Center and preserved in-place broadcast equipment and infrastructure resources.

Trespa International B.V.'s rainscreen assembly with a Euro Fox support system eliminated work at the wall's interior face on the PBS Satellite Operations Center and preserved in-place broadcast equipment and infrastructure resources.

The Euro Fox support system was selected for its adjustable cavity depth and the rainscreen system's combination of weather barrier, insulation, air barrier and demountable panels improved moisture circulation and thermal performance. The cavity varies from 2 to 8 inches to accommodate cable pathways and other infrastructure elements. Demountable panels and the adjustable cavity will accommodate future concealed electrical raceway installation.

PBS realized the existing facility no longer fulfilled projected growth, and renovation and new construction were considered. Due to site and schedule restraints, it became apparent to the design team that an addition to the existing facility would address the necessary growth and allow PBS to keep its broadcast operations running throughout the construction process.

The PBS Satellite Operations Center operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, distributes content to its member stations nationwide and hosts its website, www.pbs.org.

A rainscreen assembly was wrapped around the entire structure to address thermal, operational and maintenance issues. The panels allow for quick and unobtrusive access to the infrastructure for maintenance.

The team worked together to ensure precise fit, reveal alignment and coordination with pre-existing satellite cable buss penetrations. ROXUL Inc.'s Roxul CavityRock MD insulation board and Henry Co.'s Henry Air-Bloc 31 air barrier were utilized. The red and grey panel design was detailed for a clean aesthetic for the 12,000-square-foot project and gives the facility a modern image.
