Corrugated panels model corporate brand

A triangular site and building footprint created a dynamic between the showroom, sales offices and service garage at Audi Cape Fear, Wilmington, N.C. Surrounded by connecting streets on three sides, the automotive dealership required a design that achieved appropriate street elevations and eliminated the typical backdoor.

Approximately 5,700 square feet of Dri- Design's rainscreen system, comprised of custom Textured Series corrugated and perforated metal wall panels with hexagon-shaped voids, was installed on approximately two-thirds of the 21,800-square-foot facility. Additionally, 7,100 square feet of Englert Inc.'s H16-4 metal wall panels with a pre-weathered Galvalume finish were used on the remaining third.

The owner desired clear, high-speed overhead doors for the garage. However, none existed that also met the 130-mph wind zone testing requirements for the North Carolina region. Alternatively, Becker Morgan Group Inc., architect of record for the project, specified a hurricane-rated metal shutter that will only close in the event of a hurricane.

Becker Morgan Group provided consultation as the owner's architect during schematic design exercises led by Audi's corporate architect. Upon completion of the schematic package, Becker Morgan Group assumed responsibility of design development, construction documents and construction phase services. Additionally, the firm helped coordinate the branding package to ensure the design aligned with the owner's budget, implemented regulatory requirements, provided construction details and managed coordination and communications with Audi's vendors.
