CENTRIA's new integrated wall and window system is breathing new life into the Regional Center of Excellence for Transplantation & Kidney Care at Erie Medical Center.

It is the first building in the U.S. with CENTRIA's Smart-R Wall Solution, specified for its dynamic aesthetics, high performance and minimized detailing. John Keelan, AIA, project manager at IKM Inc., says the envelope appears more consistent in detailing and finish with an integrated wall system.

"With interlocking panels the system is thermally tight, which reduces the fussy detailing required with a non-integrated system," Keelan says. "This was a great advantage to a project with a tight timeline. It allows the contractor to move inside the building much faster by comparison."

The Smart-R Wall Solution combined CENTRIA's Formawall 3-inch-T insulated metal wall panels (IMP) with an enhanced insulated metal vertical joint (IMV), Formavue FV-600 windows and integral components such as Construction Specialties' C/S Louvers.

Approximately 25,741 square feet of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 3-inch-T IMV in Champagne with a smooth Sundance Mica finish; 3,573 square feet of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 3-inch-T IMV in Gray Velvet with a smooth Sundance Mica finish; and 7,351 square feet of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series DS-60 3-inch-T IMV in Gray Velvet with a smooth Sundance Mica finish were utilized.

Keelan says having CENTRIA as a single source for advice on all aspects of shell design and receiving submittals with the window and cladding manufacturers fully integrated and coordinated were advantages. "This coordination benefits everyone down the line- most importantly the building owner," Keelan says.

The Regional Center of Excellence for Transplantation & Kidney Care at Erie Medical Center is the first clinical collaboration between Erie County Medical Center and Kaleida Health, a large health care provider in western New York. The facility is part of a five-year plan to revitalize Erie County Medical Center's health campus and contains 36 hemodialysis stations, pre- and post-operative inpatient units and clinical support spaces.
