Louis Margitan, RA, NCARB, senior associate at JPRA Architects, says the thermoset phenolic resin core on the MCM system offers better impact resistance than some other products. "It's more hail resistant and stands up better in storms and weather," he says. "We wanted a product that won't require maintenance, replacing or anything that cuts into the bottom line."

Originally built in the early 1970s, the 1.3 million-square-foot Springfield Town Center has more than 85 retailers. Margitan says retailers are responsible for storefronts and the project was for the neutral and common areas of the renovation. "Our job was to downplay to the retailers so their brands pop," he says.

Citadel Architectural Products supplied approximately 26,400 square feet of its Envelope 2000 MCM in Silver Metallic, installed by Tecta America East LLC with a rout-and-return system during a 10-month period. Architectural Metal Designs completed most fabrication; some panels were fabricated on-site.

Brian McClelland, vice president at Tecta America East, says the only installation challenge was where the bridges came to the buildings. "These portals had panels on the exterior, the interior and on the ceiling," he says. "Some of the structure changed from the drawings, which happens, so we had to make adjustments to that. A renovation will always provide that challenge that doesn't exist in a new construction project where you're building from the ground up."
