The City of Ames, Iowa's hangar, Ames, Iowa

Photo: Joe Buttweiler, Sukup Manufacturing Co.The City of Ames, Iowa's aircraft hangar at Ames Municipal Airport features a roof with offset wings. It was constructed with two barrel-vault sections, each of which shelters half of the building. It has 4-foot-tall step rafters that enable a sturdy clerestory connection of the roof sections. The offset wings meet over the center of the structure. They are connected by trapezoidal supports. The offset design has large areas for windows between the supports.

Steve Sukup, vice president and chief financial officer at Sukup Manufacturing Co., says, "The wings idea just seemed a natural for use on an airplane hangar."

The hangar is 120 feet wide by 95 feet long. Metal was used for the support skeleton, sidewall panels, roof, fasteners, trim, flashing, gutters, downspouts and foundation reinforcement.

Sukup Manufacturing supplied its steel frame, 24-gauge Galvalume standing seam roof system and 26-gauge MSP sidewall panels in Polar White for the project. The standing seam roof panels were roll formed and radiused on the job site.

Additionally, Sukup Manufacturing supplied a wainscot in Red with an accent band in Yellow, which coordinate with Iowa State University's colors. The university is a primary client of the hangar. The hangar was designed to help modernize the airport and provide shelter for planes used by visitors to the university's nearby research park, sports teams, entertainers and business travelers.

Also part of the project, Midland Door Solutions supplied its 26-foot by 80-foot electric bi-fold door. Global Building Products LLC supplied walk-through doors and windows. The 11,400-square-foot project was completed in July 2016.
