Cornell University Rowing Center, Ithaca, N.Y.,

The Cornell University Rowing Center in Ithaca, N.Y., is the training ground for the school's men's and women's rowing teams. Reflecting the school's long-standing participation in the sport of rowing, the renovation of the existing Collyer and Robison boathouses needed to serve the needs of Cornell's rowing teams, while at the same time look aesthetically pleasing for campus visitors. Milwaukee-based HGA Architects and Engineers took on the 31,360-squarefoot renovation, located on the Cayuga Inlet. Zee Lock standing seam metal roof panels from San Antonio based Berridge Manufacturing Co. were added over existing buildings and new additions to architecturally unify the facilities.

In addition to the standing seam roof panels, Pulver Roofing Co., Utica, N.Y., installed corrugated metal wall panels and prefinished metal soffits from Allentown, Pa.- based ATAS International Inc. The corrugated metal panels visually activated the main building entry spaces with texture, while the metal soffits were developed for some of the buildings utilizing the bold Cornell red color as an accent to the original building's nautical white backdrop.

The total renovation includes a new addition of housing locker room facilities, meeting spaces and a Tradition Room for displaying crew memorabilia links to the Collyer boathouse via a two-story entrance lobby and second floor bridge. A new equipment storage facility on-site relates to the existing boathouses and team addition, and creates a village of indoor and outdoor spaces. Outdoor gathering spaces connect the entrance lobby and Tradition Room to the waterfront and communal zones where boat trailering and washing are defined. CHA, Albany, N.Y., served as the civil engineer and landscape architect, while Welliver McGuire Inc., Montour Falls, N.Y., served as the general contractor.
