Three-coat custom slate gray metal panels supplied by Englert Inc. were installed on one side of the Education Center at the Turtle Back Zoo and function as wall panels around a series of large mullioned windows. Half of the building has a curved standing steam metal roof clad with 7,000 square feet of Englert's 2000 Series striated aluminum roof and wall panels. Ray Ayerbe, of Tri-State Metals LLC, a fabricator for the project, says the biggest challenge was fabricating and installing the metal around the mullioned windows so the glass panes could be removed if necessary.

USA Architects designed the 12,000-squarefoot facility with a large outdoor plaza, views of an outdoor classroom and event space for 150 people called the TreeTop Adventure Course. The project included a lobby, four expandable classrooms that can merge into one large event space, animal holding rooms and support spaces, ticket windows and a gift shop. Sustainable design elements included waterless urinals, dual-flush toilets, materials with recycled content that were regionally sourced, UltraCool standing seam roof and wall panels, an energy-efficient HVAC system and LED lighting.
