The main barrel roof section on Waxahachie Civic Center was clad with McElroy Metal's 2 3/8-inch high, two-piece, mechanically seamed, symmetrical 238T metal roof panels. Smaller barrel roof sections were topped with the McElroy Metal's 1 3/8-inches high 138T metal roof panels. The 138T panels were installed on the smaller roofs because the 238T could not be curved to that radius.

The panels were more than 115 feet long and ran off an Archzilla rollformer attached to a scissors lift and elevated to the eaves, where installers took and carried them over the peak to the opposite roof edge. The long panels required 15 to 20 workers to handle and place.

Jake Miller, vice president of production at BRI Roofing, the installer for the project, says strong winds can create unsafe working conditions and panels can get damaged. "We're in Texas, so we get wind," he says. "There were days it was too windy to carry those panels around on the roof."

Backer rods were added to the substrate under each panel to mitigate the appearance of oil canning on the barrel roofs. Brad Tolson, project manager at ECI Consultants, a consultation firm that worked on the project, says his company feels McElroy Metal's re-roofing system is the best available. "You can re-roof without tearing everything up," he says. "It's a great over-the-top install."

The original barrel roof on the Waxahachie Civic Center was improperly installed. Among the details that caused leaks and problems were open laps, missing clips and back-water laps. "The clincher came during a wedding," Tolson says. "There was a rainstorm and water leaked in and ruined the wedding cake."

ECI Consultants recommended installing a symmetrical metal roofing system from McElroy Metal. "This is a building the City of Waxahachie is not going to sell anytime soon and we felt it was necessary to go with the Cadillac of roofing systems," Tolson says. "Installing metal over the top was the easiest and most efficient method of solving the problems. It's going to last 50 years. Aesthetically, it looks great."
