2017 Metal Construction News Building and Roofing Awards

The judges admired Speed Art Museum’s contemporary expansion of a historic building in Louisville, Ky., and bestowed it the Grand Award. The museum features folded aluminum panels based on the original structure’s limestone. Other recipients included a zinc-clad visual arts building with an industrial aesthetic, art museum with stainless steel, hyperbolic forms and cultural center with metal roofs that divert water in a unique way. John Bencher, principal, AGA Architects, Marina del Rey, Calif.[13]
Bencher received a Bachelor of Science in architecture from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich., and a master’s in architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), Los Angeles. In 2002, he joined AGA Architects as partner. Bencher has more than 20 years of experience in the design and execution of unique buildings for office, commercial, industrial, corporate, educational and residential clients. Projects include robotics and digital prototyping facilities, production and post-production facilities and custom residential estates. He has been an adjunct professor at SCI-Arc teaching classes in design, theory, design development, construction documentation and process.
Charles Bloszies, FAIA, SE, LEED AP, principal, Office of Charles F. Bloszies FAIA Ltd., San Francisco[14]
Bloszies received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Colorado, Denver, and master’s degrees in architecture and civil/urban engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He is a practicing architect, structural engineer and educator. Bloszies is the author of “Old Buildings, New Designs – Architectural Transformations” (Princeton Architectural Press, 2011), about successful integration of new design and old architecture.
Charles W. Wray, Jr., AIA, LEED AP, principal, BCWH Architects, Richmond, Va.[15]
Wray received a Bachelor of Architecture from the Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. At BCWH Architects for more than 29 years, he has managed a variety of library and educational projects through all phases of design and delivery. In addition, Wray provides internal leadership of BCWH Architect’s project processes and is heavily involved in developing its staff.
