Editor’s Corner: Metal construction can answer the global housing challenge

The International Union of Architects[2] (UIA) has declared “Housing is a human right. Build it.” the theme for World Architecture Day 2026, which will be marked on October 5.

Created by the UIA in 1985, World Architecture Day is celebrated each year on the first Monday of October, in parallel with the United Nations’ World Habitat Day[3].

Access to safe, adequate, and affordable housing remains out of reach for millions of people, says the union, which is why it is calling on architects to advance equitable access to housing through design, research, and advocacy.

One of the key messages behind this year’s theme is that addressing the housing crisis requires practical, sustainable, and context-responsive approaches, including the development of inclusive housing models and the reuse of existing building stock.

America’s metal construction industry is more than capable of delivering desperately needed housing solutions—both here and abroad—that are already extremely practical and, yes, sustainable.

The variety of housing models and types is limited only by our imaginations.

For the metal construction industry, I think the global housing challenge raises an obvious question, and it is not “What role can metal building systems, prefab construction, and other metal-based building technologies play in delivering housing more quickly, efficiently, and at scale?”

Instead, the question we should be asking is:

“How do we make sure our metal construction industry is invited to every discussion that’s serious about delivering solutions?”
