The Cleo parking structure at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., is more than a functional hub for thousands of vehicles; it’s designed to embody the aesthetics and branding of Disneyland Resort.

Understanding that every element of a visitor’s experience matters, the design team at Architects Orange LLP (AO Architects) faced a challenge: how to provide protection for guests while enhancing the enchanting atmosphere of the park.

To achieve this, the firm introduced a series of translucent polycarbonate canopies, reminiscent of a forest or garden, sprouting around entry and exit escalators. Translucent polycarbonate canopies serve as a playful architectural feature, welcoming visitors with an airy and bright environment, and shielding them from the sun and rain.

In addition to providing protection from the elements, the canopy systems align with project goals for sustainability and aesthetic harmony. To complete the project, Golden State Glazing Inc. installed Kingspan Light + Air LLC’s U-lite polycarbonate canopy systems.

Cleo parking structure, named for Geppetto’s goldfish, Cleo, in the Pinocchio film, is a model of how thoughtful design can transform a necessary element of a theme park into a part of visitors’ overall experiences, ensuring even the experience of going to and from the theme park feels cohesive.
