May 11 Coronavirus Survey: Overall Attitude

We conducted this final survey from Monday, May 11 through Thursday, May 14, and 109 people responded. We broke our report into four areas:

• Audience characteristics
• Overall attitude
• Revenue changes
• Project and employee changes

Overall Attitude

There is little that showcases the acceptance of the current situation than the changing attitudes toward the coronavirus threat. In the first survey, 58.4% of respondents said the coronavirus threat was very dangerous, but a month later that had more than halved to 23.8%.

The most notable change is among those who view the coronavirus not very dangerous or not dangerous at all with 27.6% of respondents in the last survey claiming that compared to just 7.8% in the first survey.

The decline in concern about the coronavirus threat goes across all types of respondents, but it is among architects that the biggest change occurred. In the first survey, 80% of architects said the threat was very serious. A month later, only 21.4% rated it that.

While attitudes about the threat of the coronavirus itself have declined considerably, the concerns about its business impact have not altered much at all. Across all three surveys, more than 90% of contractors, architects and manufacturers are very worried or somewhat worried about the business impact.

Within that cohort, there has been a shift, though, from 62.9% saying they were very worried at the end of March to only 41.9% expressing the same concern in the middle of May.

Regardless of whether the respondent is a contractor, architect or manufacturer, their concerns about the economic impact of the coronavirus have changed very little. We dig into the specifics of the business impact or contractors in the Revenue Changes[4] section.
