Hundreds attended, but people who missed any or all the seminars can view them over the next six months. Topics covered were energy codes, accreditation, wall and roofs specialties, and leadership skills among others. To learn more about the conference and register, go to www.mbcea.org[1].

Builder of the Year entries are judged by an outside panel of judges based on the following criteria:

Scott Steel Erectors Inc., Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, claimed the Building of the Year Award with its execution of the Air Canada Hangar in Mississauga, Ontario. Burnco Manufacturing Inc., Vaughan, Ontario; Varco Pruden Buildings, Memphis, Tenn.; and Steelway Building Systems, Aylmer, Ontario, supplied the pre-engineered metal building.

Besides recognizing the building of the year, awards of excellence and merit were presented in three categories: specialty/retail, office/warehouse and education/recreation.

This year’s judges were Ronald Albert, AIA, RHA Architects, Dallas; Matthew Jarmel, Jarmel Kizel Architects and Engineers, Livingston, N.J.; and Jerry Gorski, Gorski Engineering, Collegeville, Pa. To be eligible, a building must have been completed in 2019. For more information on MBCEA’s Building of the Year winners, visit www.mbcea.org/awards-recognition/[2].

The following MBCEA members also received awards, which you can read about in more detail on the following pages: Thomas Phoenix International Inc., Eastampton, N.J.; APX Construction Group, Mankato, Minn.; BARNES buildings & management group inc., Weymouth, Mass.; Sure Steel Inc., South Weber, Utah; Dunn Building Co. LLC, Birmingham, Ala.; and Peter Flewelling, Exeter, N.H.

2020 Building of the Year

The Air Canada Hangar 5 was built on a congested site, squeezed between two structures. Scott Steel Erectors Inc. assembled 4,500 tons of structural steel for a building with a 500-foot clear span and an eave height of 106 feet. Especially challenging was moving large structural members around the site. The hangar is the fifth largest hangar in the world.

Awards of Excellence

Specialty Category

Gabriella Truck Sales’ new office and retail space is located right next to John F. Kennedy International Airport. Thomas Phoenix International erected this 63,500-square-foot mechanic’s shop and sales office for Stuart Berger Construction. The office and retail space has a 17,000-square-foot footprint, which doubles its utility with a full second-story mezzanine and plenty of glass. The shop facilities contain 30 overhead door bays for full service and repair of commercial vehicles. Two, 5-ton overhead cranes cover over 300 feet of the service bay areas.

Manufacturing Category

APX Construction Group LLC combined interesting architectural metal and concrete to capture a visually appealing building for its offices, warehouse and shop. The 13,000-square-foot building features insulated concrete walls and in-floor heating for energy efficiency. It also uses insulated metal panels by Metl-Span. A large overhang accentuates the horizontal form.

Educational and Recreation Category

The plan for the Boston Sports Institute project consists of four buildings: an ice rink, field house, pool and entry. Clear spans provide uninterrupted space for the ice rink, pool house and field house, while mezzanines wrap shoes areas and offer patrons viewing stands as well as a running track. Below the mezzanine space was provided for locker rooms, a warm pool, offices and other support spaces. The 101,842-square-foot building was erected on a constrained site where workers only had access to three sides of the building.

Awards of Merit

Specialty Category

The Southwest Airlines Maintenance Hangar at Houston’s Hobby Airport (HOU) is Southwest’s largest hangar. With clear spans of 219 feet from front to back and more than 240 feet wide at the hangar doors, it can hold six Boeing 737s or two Boeing 787s. Due to height restrictions and potential disturbances to air traffic, Sure Steel pre-assembled most of the wide-span elements into large kits to reduce the amount of time with a crane in the air.

All the roof panels were rolled in continuous sheets and installed as one piece. That meant a portion of the panels reached 230 feet in some areas, which required careful execution to move the panels into place without any damage.

Manufacturing Category

The new facility for Warrior Tractor & Equipment was designed by Fitts Architects and comprises three buildings. The building holds space for a shop, storage area, parts department and office. The 58,180-square-foot building has an eave height of 36 feet at its highest point in the building housing the shop. Dunn Building installed top running cranes.

Educational and Recreation Category

The computer science department at Middlebury College needed new housing. In addition, other departments would be renovated in the near future and required swing space. The goal was to develop a swing space for these needs near the campus core but do so on a very tight budget. Exploring the limits of metal buildings, the new structure is flexible enough to meet the needs of a variety of departments and artful enough to be a pleasing addition to the campus. The 22,036-square-foot building has an eave height of 35 feet. McLeod Kredell Architects designed the building.
