Snapshot: The Colossus

Rising like a massive, monstrous metal giant with its mouth agape ready to devour, the hangar looks like a creature from a science fiction B-movie. In reality it is a 80- by 150-foot marina service building with a 62- by 60-foot-tall insulated, bifold, liftstrap, automatic latching system door in Portland, Maine. Designed specifically to service large boats in a nearby harbor, it lets people access and work on boats in the offseason in a more controlled environment. The big door, with sheeting, weighs in at 42,415 pounds and is wind-rated at 115 mph. For added strength, it has one exterior truss and five interior trusses. It’s equipped with four, 5-horsepower motors, 24 liftstraps, an automatic latching system and 10 windows to bring in natural light. Once completely open, the door stretches out 30 feet.
