The project is noteworthy for its new parking structure strategically placed at the northeast corner acting as a distinct entry monument for the community as well as for patients traveling from all over Southern California. Its defining feature is a kinetic façade—comprised of 0.040-inch-thick individual flapper tags in various sizes, coated in six Kynar shades—from Pittsburgh-based EXTECH/Exterior Technologies Inc. The MCN Award Judges selected it calling it, “the most innovative use of metal we’ve seen of all the entries,” saying this project “took something that was so mundane and turned it into a civic presence.”

The other category winners in the MCN Project Excellence Awards are:

• Metal Walls-New Construction: Rabbit Hole Distillery Tank Expansion Building
• Metal Walls-Retrofit: Northeast Classic Car Museum
• Metal Building Systems Buildings: EJ Basler
• Metal Craftsmanship: Martin County Courthouse Dome Restoration
• Metal Roofing-Retrofit: U.S. Naval Academy Dome Rehabilitation
• Judges Award: Boxcar Apartments
• Judges Award: Royal Norwegian Embassy
