Top Metal Builders for 2013

Our list is broken into two segments. We report the largest companies by tonnage of steel purchased on one list. And the 100 largest companies by square footage of metal building construction put in place on the second list. This year, both lists total 113 companies.

One element of compiling this list that has become increasingly challenging is determining which companies are doing what. There seems to be some consolidation up and down the supply chain that may have taken place during the recent construction slowdown. Companies that formerly were only building erectors may also now be working as general contractors. We also see some companies moving toward a more independent status, representing more than one manufacturer.

We’re also seeing smaller dealers who are offering either installation services themselves or doing so with qualified or recommended contractor bases. This movement and potential consolidation of the industry will be interesting to watch in future studies.

In spite of that kind of churning, we also see greater stability in the list, with the same companies appearing year after year after year. That’s not unusual in top performer lists such as Top Metal Builders. The more sophisticated companies tend to land more and larger projects. Their size alone makes them more stable, and they have devoted significant capital to metal building construction so are unlikely to veer away from it. It would be surprising, to see significant change on the list.
