Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 2,584,000 net tons (NT) of steel in July, including 2,060,000 NT of finished steel (down 5% and 4%, respectively, from June final data). Annualized total and finished steel imports in 2011 would be 29.5 and 22.5 million NT, respectively, up 23% and 20% vs. 2010. Finished steel import market share in July was an estimated 23% and is also 23% year-to date (YTD).
