[1]Mariella (“Mari”) Escobedo, a construction management student at Ball State University and a native of South Bend, Ind., has been named the S-5![2] Scholarship recipient for the 2025–2026 academic year. Escobedo was selected for her academic excellence, demonstrated leadership potential and commitment to pursuing a career in the construction industry.
The S-5! Scholarship[3] was established to support students pursuing education in construction-related fields and to help strengthen the future workforce of the built environment.
“Mari stood out for not only her academic achievement, but her kindness, dedication, and determination,” said Vicky Smith, S-5! director of human resources and charity committee member. “She demonstrates a strong work ethic, a willingness to step outside her comfort zone, and a genuine commitment to service—qualities that will make her a valuable contributor to the construction industry.”
In her scholarship essay, Escobedo shared that her interest in construction was influenced by growing up around the industry and seeing firsthand the work ethic and pride that goes into building projects. She described how her family’s connection to construction, including the example set by her father, helped shape her appreciation for the trades and inspired her to pursue construction management. Escobedo wrote about her desire to “combine that foundation with formal education to become a strong project leader who contributes positively to the industry while helping open doors for more women in construction.”
Letters of recommendation submitted on Escobedo’s behalf further highlighted both her capabilities and character. According to one academic recommender, “Mari has always shown herself to be a very committed, dedicated, and impressive student… who deeply cares about and values her education.”
Another long-time mentor wrote, “Beyond kindness, Mari has a quiet bravery that some might miss,” and concluded, “I have no doubt that she will be successful.”
“This scholarship will help me not only financially, but it gives me hope that others believe in my future to succeed as a woman in construction[4],” said Escobedo.
