The main objective of the Bergfeld Park Amphitheater project was to provide a multifunctional outdoor venue that accommodates a wide variety of public performances while respecting the historic significance of the park and surrounding neighborhood.

Operating on a tight budget with public and private funds, cost effective material and structural selections were key. The design achieved its objective by implementing a simple and cost-effective pre-engineered band shell form that allows both hired performances and community access to the stage during all park hours.

Dilapidated outdoor theater seats were replaced over a new and accessible riser system, softened by areas of turf seating to offer an array of comfortable seating options. The history of the park and the neighborhood was honored through the thoughtful selection of materials as well as preservation of walls and trees. The pre-engineered metal structure was designed to create a modern form with sensitivity to the park’s history and historic homes surrounding the park.

Metal was used for its aesthetics, cost and durability. To visually soften and balance the roughness of historic walls, smooth metal panel cladding and trellis materials were chosen. Additionally, colors of metal contrast with the grass surrounding in the park and blend with the colors of the trees.

In terms of budget, the pre-engineered metal structure assisted in realizing the project. Low installation and maintenance costs of the metal wall panels helped bring the project within budget as well. Metal’s durability was essential as well. Being a public space with numerous programs held monthly, the stage area required considerations for withstanding those programs.

To complete the 5,000-square-foot project, Red Dot Buildings supplied and installed its 26-gauge 7.2 Panels in Burnished Slate. AVAdek supplied the trellis system, which is extruded aluminum alloy with a Dark Bronze anodized finish.
