McGill Smith Punshon Inc. designed Butler Tech Bioscience Center with a metal rainscreen. Craig Rambo, AIA, LEED AP, of McGill Smith Punshon and lead architect for the project, says metal worked well with the sloped design. “This type of metal was selected because it’s durable and sustainable, as well as easily adaptable to the sloped forms of the building,” he says.

Valley Interior Systems Inc. constructed the rainscreen with 8,990 square feet of Mitsubishi Plastics Composites America Inc.’s ALPOLIC 4-mm aluminum-faced composite panels with a fire-retardant core in a Red Kynar 500 two-coat finish. The rainscreen was attached with Mitsubishi Plastics Composites America’s Dry Seal System. Shook Construction Co. and Touchstone CPM Inc. provided general contracting services as a joint venture for the project.

McGill Smith Punshon designed Butler Tech Bioscience Center to accommodate a third story with an additional 18,000 square feet. The 32,000-square-foot project was the first phase of a two-phase plan. It was completed in August 2015.
