After a fire destroyed its original headquarters building, the owner, Central Steel Service Inc., a steel distributor, rebuilt it with metal. Keith Woods, president at Central Steel Service, says, “As a steel distributor specializing in self-weathering steel, our goal was to utilize self-weathering steel in as many facets of the construction as possible so that the completed project could serve as a model for the various applications of weathering steels.”
Birchfield, Penuel and Associates LLC’s design for the 8,000-square-foot office building incorporates vertical and horizontal panels. General contractor Mike Mooney Construction installed the corrugated panels vertically and R-panels horizontally. Sloan Supply Metal Roofing Co. Inc. supplied 15,000 square feet of its weathering steel panels. They were manufactured from cold-rolled 22-gauge ASTM A606-4 self-weathering steel.
“In addition to the exterior siding panels, we also constructed planter boxes which serve as a natural safety barrier, as well as utilizing standard pipe bollards, both constructed from self-weathering steel,” Woods says. “The front canopy and exterior staircase was also fabricated from weathering steel including the stair treads. The exterior patio fence was constructed utilizing weathering steel pipe, tube and channel in conjunction with wooden slats. Self-weathering exterior sign posts were also utilized for directional and parking signage.”
