To convert warehouse space to conditioned interior space at Christos Mar Thoma Church, a metal building system was added to the top of the existing building, raising the roof to a gable form.

Mike Bolton, EIT, project manager at Napoli Construction LLC, metal building contractor for the project, says a structural eave extension and spandrel wind beams were incorporated into the design to align the pre-engineered structure to the existing building line and support the existing 12-inch masonry. “The new metal roof finish can be seen from blocks away and is sure to stay weathertight and vibrant for years to come,” Bolton says.

Brecknock Builders erected American Buildings Co.’s metal building system to complete the 7,700-square-foot project.

At the roof, Brecknock Builders installed American Buildings Co.’s 24-gauge Standing Seam 360 roof system in Dark Bronze Kynar, rising at 5:12 pitch. Brecknock Builders also installed Sno Gem Inc.’s 2-inch iClad-S snow retention system in Dark Bronze.

The endwall nearest the church entrance has a parapet topped with Dark Bronze metal coping and backer panels flashed with roof panel.

For the walls, Brecknock Builders installed American Buildings Co.’s Architectural III wall panels as a substrate for an exterior insulated finish system (EIFS). The 24-gauge panels conceal fasteners within panel ribs and provide rigidity and a flat exterior for the EIFS substrate.

The project received second place in the Church/ Religious Centers category of American Buildings’ 2020 Excellence in Design Awards

“The Christos Mar Thoma project was a bold transformation from existing warehouse space to a beautiful gabled raised roof addition that the church community and its parishioners can be very proud of,” Bolton says.
