Insulated metal panels (IMPs) and metal composite material panels were essential to creating a modern design for the City of Las Vegas Courthouse.
PGAL LLC specified IMPs with an architectural flat profile and designed the courthouse with IMPs at exterior walls, an entrance canopy and soffits. Metal composite material (MCM) was used for column covers and applications inside the two-story courthouse.
Lance Berrey, RA, senior associate at PGAL, says, “IMPs were chosen because of the R-value they offered for building envelope efficiency and performance. Additionally, the panels helped create a smooth, contemporary façade that fit the aesthetic of a new modern and forward-thinking municipal court.”
ARJ Inc. installed Metl-Span’s 2-inchthick CF Architectural IMPs with a flat profile in two colors: Silver Metallic and custom Eames for Blue. ARJ fabricated and installed Alfrex by Unience USA Inc.’s MCM in Anodic Clear Mica.
Michael Romack, project manager at ARJ, says, “IMPs are an economical option. The goal was to get the smooth look of ACM and the architectural flat exterior finish definitely helped achieve that.”
The entrance canopy built with IMPs is an important architectural feature and part of the construction process of the courthouse. “The entry canopy is what makes this project unique,” Romack says. “We installed IMPs essentially as a soffit, so it’s on upside down with a lot of angles. Fortunately, it’s a pretty simple system to work with.”
Regarding the entrance canopy, Berrey says, “The front canopy and plaza are elements of the project that really stand out and give the project a strong personality. Overall, we’re very satisfied with the completed project and happy that it’s working out to be a successful addition to the justice corridor in downtown.”
