The new Churchville Fire Department Firehouse in Churchville, N.Y., gives the volunteer fire department and ambulance corps a new, modern facility from which to perform their vital service to the community. The firehouse was constructed with a pre-engineered metal building structure, roof and wall panels from American Buildings Co.
The firehouse opened in September 2009 and is approximately 20,000 square feet (1,858 m2); three times the size of the old facility. It houses all of the department’s equipment and apparatus adequately with the proper amount of space around each vehicle required for efficient access and use. The apparatus section of the facility features eight vehicle bays, five in front and three in the back, including three drive-thru bays. The attached auxiliary section of the firehouse is equipped with an exercise facility, a large meeting room, commercial kitchen, offices and training centers. “Public space for meetings, fundraisers and events was needed in Churchville, and was an integral component of the design,” explained Peter Wehner, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB Associate and senior project architect at Passero Associates.
“Use of a pre-engineered metal structure was required to meet the project schedule and budget of $4.2 million,” Wehner said. “Stretching the boundaries of metal building design, the structure features gabled dormers and non-typical details. Originally conceived as intersecting perpendicular buildings, the design was changed to meet the revised project schedule and budget, while still meeting the department needs.”
Longevity and durability were two of the main considerations for choosing the metal building and roofing systems, according to Wehner. “This project was a significant investment for the future and metal met both of those criteria.”
Several public information sessions were held to gain public support and address the concerns of the community. The project received multiple funding sources from both the village and town.
