Farmingdale Hay Barn at Farmingdale State College, Farmingdale, N.Y.

Established in 1912 as the New York State School of Agriculture, the college has expanded beyond farming techniques with 33 degrees offered in a variety of programs. At the same time, the college has stayed true to its roots with a few environmental courses still offered at campus facilities. Case in point— the hay barn used for storage.

The barn had an asphalt shingle roof— over building felt and plywood deck on pre-engineered wood trusses—that was in bad shape. “The roof was leaking and badly deteriorated to the extent that the entire roof structure was removed, including the wood trusses,” said Lawrence M. Freeley Jr., AIA, with Ward Associates P.C.

According to Freeley, Ward Associates went with metal for this reroofing project because metal is long lasting, durable, wind resistant, low maintenance and aesthetically pleasing. Installed by Tri W Roofing, the new roof is 5,500 square feet (511 m2) of 0.032-aluminum Field-Lok (FLS137) in Patina Green from ATAS International Inc. About 800 square feet (74 m2) of Multi-Purpose Walls (MPN120) also were installed on the barn to complete the project. The wall panels are 0.032-aluminum in Patina Green.

The project was underway from June to October 2009, during the U.S. Open, which takes place at the nearby USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Freeley said they faced some challenges because of U.S. Open access through the site and because of weather delays, but he otherwise described the project as a dream. He also portrayed ATAS in a similarly delightful way. He said: “ATAS handles the entire package—roof and wall panels, accessories, gutters and leaders. It is a quality company with responsive representation for design, support and construction issues.”
