Landmark Architects specified a steel standing seam roof system to replace a copper roof and walls on Gross Memorial Coliseum at Fort Hays State University. To resemble the aged copper roof that was removed, Dark Bronze panels were used.
Luke Haines, owner and president at Roofmasters Inc., says 2-inch by 2-inch redwood battens disintegrated in some places from heat exposure under copper caps.
Roofmasters employees repaired a few areas on the roof and covered the entire roof with Carlisle WIP Products’ peel-and-stick, high-temperature ice and water shield. At the roof and some walls, Roofmasters installed 50,000 square feet of McElroy Metal’s 238T standing seam roof system in Dark Bronze.
Walls are between four steep-slope entrances with 14:12 slopes around the building. At the bottom of the metal panel walls is a lower slope roof with an 8:12 slope.
Roofmasters employees hoisted a rollformer to a flat roof section at the coliseum; panels for the steep slope and the walls were produced there. Each panel, as long as 65 feet, was lowered from the flat roof section into place with a rope and clamp.
Another challenge was building an internal gutter at the bottom of the steep-slope roofing above the entrances. Gutters are more than a foot wide. Haines says PVC-coated metal was heat welded at the laps to make it watertight.
