Hotel EMC2, Chicago

Hotel EMC2 is a science-themed hotel named for Albert Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence: E=mc2. To highlight the theme, KOO LLC designed metal exterior walls with geometrical patterns. Kevin Parzych, architectural designer at KOO, says, “We were asked to develop a tower façade that fit a hotel room module, introduced a diagonal geometry to the façade and used a subtle but identifiable color range to make a pattern.”

Tuschall Engineering Co. Inc. installed 17,985 square feet of Dri-Design’s 0.08-inch post-painted aluminum wall panels in three colors: Anchor Gray, Black Ink and Gravel Gray. Tuschall installed the panels over insulation with thermally insulated sub-girts and Z-furrings.

The hotel’s narrow 60-foot by 110-foot site affected staging for the project. Jim Tuschall, president at Tuschall, says, “The building is on a zero lot line, so all the wall panels had to be staged within the building every third floor.”

Installation on the 21-story hotel also required coordination among contractors. “The general contractor (Pepper Construction) left out windows so we could feed the panels out to the crew on a swing stage,” Tuschall says.

Hotel EMC2, located in the Streeterville neighborhood, has 195 guest rooms, two large meeting areas and restaurant.
