As part of an expansion and enhancement project for Living Word Community Church, Jeffrey Harris Architect LLC designed a series of sloped and curved metal roofs that give the church a distinct appearance.
Jeffrey Harris, RA, of Jeffrey Harris Architect, says, “The original building was a very utilitarian design with concrete block exterior walls and flat roofs. The exterior design challenge included adding a significant amount of curb appeal to this existing building, and to bring more attention to the primary entrances. This was accomplished mainly with the use of sloping and curved standing seam metal roofing.”
In addition to giving the church a distinct look, the roof design connects with the church’s branding, Harris says. “The church logo is an open Bible which became the inspiration for the exterior design of overlapping curved roofs.”
The expansion added 26,607 square feet to the building’s existing 93,393 square feet. The existing building was constructed in 2017 and the addition was completed in 2018.
At roofs, Progressive Services Inc. installed ATAS International Inc.’s Dutch Seam structural standing seam roof system and Curved 1 1/2-inch Field-Lok nonstructural standing seam roof system, both in Medium Bronze.
The project included structural steel, metal decking, exposed rolled arch beams and Porte Cochere exposed steel installed by Woolf Steel Inc.
KBM Industries installed iron railings and stairs, and Shearer Welding installed steel interior canopies and panels with the church’s logo at the Porte Cochere.
Design Plastic Systems installed canopies on the exterior, supplied by Mapes Panels LLC. Brown’s Glass installed Kawneer Co. Inc.’s entrances, storefront systems and windows. In the lobby, Smucker Co. installed Armstrong Ceiling and Wall Solutions’ Metalworks metal ceiling system.
The project won first place in the Commercial Roofs category of ATAS International Inc.’s 2018 Project of the Year Awards.
