Metal gives exterior texture

The owners of a private residence in Kensington, Md., had a variety of goals for their renovation project of a single-story, mid-century modern house. They wanted a large, open living space with lots of natural light and a new front porch. The owners also sought a design for the exterior with some interplay between materials and textures.

Balodemas Architects Chartered designed the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house with a butterfly-shaped roof and a mix of cedar and metal siding. The V-shaped steel siding was installed in an alternating pattern of 5-inch and 7-inch Vs to create texture. The vertical surfaces catch light at different angles and have multiple degrees of light and shadow.

The project added 570 square feet to the 1,860-square-foot structure, originally built in 1951, bringing it to 2,430 total square feet. The house has a new reconfigured interior with open living, dining and kitchen spaces, a new porch and master bedroom, and renovated bathrooms.

Spectrum Design Build Inc. installed 715 square feet of ATAS International Inc.’s 24-gauge MPV metal wall panels in Champagne with a Kynar finish for the project. Windows and exterior doors were replaced with larger products. Windsor Windows and Doors Inc.’s aluminum-clad Douglas fir wood windows and Western Window Systems’ patio doors were installed. The project was completed in July 2015.
