LDP Architecture Inc. designed an office building out to its property lines on a 20-foot-wide by 80-foot-long lot at 671 Harrison St. The five-story, 6,500-square-foot building features four balconies angled toward the street. The front-most portion of the building cantilevers over the sidewalk with an obtuse angle.
Michelle Loeb, principal at LDP Architecture, says, “The angle creates a visual tension with the surrounding, five-story, metal framed element that cants out from the face of the building. A rhythm is created on the street-facing elevation with offset, floating, perforated metal balconies and a pattern of obscured glass in the storefront system.”
For the second through fifth floors, Crown Sheet Metal and Skylights Inc. fabricated and installed Quality Metalcrafts LLC’s Americlad 0.04-inch-thick, 18-gauge, Flat Lock aluminum shingle siding in Charcoal Gray and Deep Blue. For the ground floor, Crown Sheet Metal and Skylights fabricated and installed 0.125-inch-thick, cold-rolled aluminum panels in Duranar Eclipse Gray and Deep Blue.
“Custom metal panels lap the framed element with two tones, gray at the face, and exterior sides with a pop of blue color wrapping the interior,” Loeb says. “The ground floor recessed entry carries the blue metal panels into the entry sequence.”
The rear of the building conceals an open-air stairway clad with industrial metal guardrails. At balconies, Bay View Iron Works Inc. fabricated and installed 11 -gauge perforated carbon steel panels with 1/2-inch holes with a natural finish. For balcony floors, Bay View Iron Works installed Grating Pacific Inc.’s 1-inch by 3/16-inch steel bar grating with a natural finish and 1-inch by 3/16-inch bar grating guardrails.
“Metal was used to create a refined edge and entry sequence to the building and an industrial edge at the floating balconies and rear open stair,” Loeb says. “Metal was selected because it is a multifaceted material with a durable, yet refined finish.”
Programmed spaces include interview rooms, conference rooms, enclosed offices and open plan workspaces on each floor.
