Perforated metal panels unify expanded campus near Springfield

Having already seen success combining seventh and eighth grades with its existing junior-senior campus near Springfield, Ill., Williamsville-Sherman Community Unit School District No. 15 expanded its footprint to accommodate fifth and sixth grades in the existing junior high facility.

New features, such as a multi-use theater, band and choral areas, athletic upgrades—as well as a new wing for fifth graders—were also part of the project.

But the project needed to do more than simply add classroom, arts, and athletic spaces. It also needed to unify a campus serving multiple grade levels.

BLDD Architects addressed the challenge using painted perforated corrugated metal. The building team specified 2,200 sf of panels, which are available in a variety of hole sizes, spacing, and open-space percentages.

Installed over glass curtain wall windows at building corners, the purple and yellow screens bring the district’s colors across the expanded campus while adding bright contrast to an otherwise neutral exterior palette.
