Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center, Grand Rapid, Mich.

The $65 million Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center was funded when Joan Kroc, the late widow of McDonald’s Corp. founder Ray Kroc, gave the Salvation Army $1.6 billion to build community centers in 38 cities throughout the U.S. Located in Grand Rapids, Mich., the facility incorporates a 400-seat performing arts center, classrooms and conference areas for tutoring, skills development and job training. The building features 22,000 square feet of 0.080-aluminum wall panels finished in Bright Silver from Dri-Design, Holland, Mich. The facility also includes an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, basketballs courts and climbing wall. The center also contains outdoor facilities, including soccer fields, playgrounds and a baseball diamond. Isaac V. Norris & Associates, Grand Rapids, served as the project architect, and Grand Rapids-based Metal Tech installed the Dri-Design panels.
