More than 67,000 square feet of Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp.’s metal roof and wall panels were installed on the Redding School of the Arts, completed in August 2011.
The project utilized 520 squares of Magna-Loc pencil rib standing seam roof panels from Metal Sales, much of which has rigid photovoltaic solar panels attached to the panel ribs, 12 squares of Magna-Loc flat pan panels on a nearby utility building, 138 squares of Metal Sales IC72-Panels and perforated TL-17 soffit panels in the hallways as a perforated pin board to display student artwork.
James Theimer, principle of Trilogy Architecture, says they were looking for metal panels with recycled content, durability and an energy-friendly Solar Reflective Index value. “Redding School of the Arts has been designed to last for 100 years,” Theimer says. “With Metal Sales wall and roof panels, I think we found a product that would live up to that challenge.”
Metal Sales’ energy-efficient roof and wall panels reflect solar heat energy, reducing the amount of energy needed for cooling, provide a platform for renewable energy technology and rainwater harvesting systems and minimize construction waste. The recyclable panels contain up to 30 percent recycled material.
The design for the kindergarten-througheighth- grade public charter school was based on two ideas: the learning environment should create opportunities to show students, teachers and parents the importance of sustainability and students should be inspired to learn in creative, colorful and fun surroundings.
Redding School of the Arts is the first new school campus to receive Platinum certification under the LEED for Schools 2009 standards and is expected to achieve net zero energy.
Contributing LEED points were Metal Sales’ Energy Star-certified colors on the 100-percent-recyclable panels and Metal Sales’ close proximity to the job site. Additionally, the school is designed to achieve the Collaborative for High Performance Schools’ certification, a rating program intended to improve student performance and enhance the education experience by building the best possible schools.
Matt Ludlow, project manager at Kodiak Roofing & Waterproofing Co., says his company worked with Metal Sales on numerous projects. “Once again, everyone at Metal Sales has gone above and beyond to provide excellent customer service and technical support,” he says.
