Lance Enyart, AIA, LEED AP, design principal at LEA Architects LLC, says, “The architecture of the Somerton City Hall in Somerton, Ariz., drew inspiration from the agricultural context of the land and culture of the surrounding agricultural community. Standing seam metal wall panels of varying widths and colors in combination with local and regional ground face concrete masonry define the building’s surface and metaphorically relate to row crops in the area.”
At walls of the 14,500-square-foot building, Lines and Lundgreen Inc. installed Rollfab Metal Products’ PS-10 standing seam metal panels in Slate Gray and Patina Green. Panels have three widths: 12 inches, 14 1/2 inches and 20 inches.
Furthermore, the project is designed to be sustainable and energy efficient; numerous passive, active and regionally appropriate sustainable design strategies are incorporated.
“Random widths of west facing, perforated metal panels shade the glazing in front of the main stair element at the lobby and align with the random patterning of the standing seam metal panels at the second floor above,” Enyart says. “Triangular, perforated metal shade hoods at east and west facing vertical slot windows articulate the building’s façade and further mitigate direct solar heat gain into the building.”
Lines and Lundgreen installed Mc- NICHOLS Co.’s perforated metal shade screen panels with several widths. The panels are produced with 16-gauge galvanized steel (G-90) and have 48% open area and blank margins custom bent to a C-profile. The perforated holes have 1/2-inch diameters and 11/16-inch staggered row centers, and there are two-and-a-half holes per square inch.
Metal was selected as a primary material for aesthetics, sustainability and durability. High recycled content prevalent in the metal used for the project was an important part of the project’s overall sustainable strategy.
“Inherent properties of the standing seam metal wall panels and perforated metal shade screens make it a permanent and low maintenance solution to the city’s request for a durable and energy-efficient building,” Enyart says.
The building houses classroom space for Arizona Western College and an expansion of Sanguinetti Park. Its perforated metal, acoustical roof and floor deck allows the structure of the building to be expressed and provide acoustical attenuation in interior workspaces.
At the roof and second floor of the two-story building, Southwestern Steel and Supply Co. installed perforated metal, acoustical roof and floor decking. Canam Buildings, a division of Canam Group Inc., supplied the decking, which is produced with cold-formed steel sheets that conform to ASTM-A-653, Grade 40.
