A restoration project was completed on the 211-foottall steeple of the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church as part of the building’s transformation into a community event facility, Steeple Square. The church was first built between 1864 and 1867.

Sheet meal on the steeple was replaced with copper on the Gothic-style church building. Molds of the removed steeple elements were used to fabricate matching copper elements. The Durable Restoration Co. installed Corken Steel Products Co.’s 20-ounce copper sheets for the project. Additionally, Chicago Metal Supply and Fabrication Inc. fabricated intricate copper pieces with stamp work and the cross on top. The project includes aprons, pans, valleys, fascia, vented dormers, layered dormers, gable ends, finials and gold leafing.

A.J. Davis, project manager at Durable Restoration, says, “We know how copper works, how it moves, expands and contracts. We put in the time and research to find the best methods that will ensure a long-lasting copper installation.”
