5G Studio Collaborative LLC designed The Stack mixed-use building at the Deep Ellum entertainment district with two stacked pods.
The façade on the 16-story, 215,000-square-foot office, retail and parking development changes from masonry and matching, precast brick veneer at street level to a modern-looking, metal-clad upper level. The building is split horizontally by an amenity level with a large wrap-around balcony that overlooks the Dallas skyline and separates the podium from the tower.
The brick reflects the neighborhood’s historic architecture. The building’s lower, nine-level public parking podium has a tumbled-brick look primarily on street-facing elevations
Christine Robbins-Elrod, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, ND Homes, WELL AP, GACP, and principal at 5G Studio Collaborative, says, “The lower building volume blends with Deep Ellum’s historic neighborhood and shows respect for the neighborhood’s history of brick and mortar architecture, while the upper building volume aesthetically expresses the goal of creating an innovative office model for the future with its modern aesthetic and visual prioritization of outdoor amenity spaces for the building’s occupants.”
On the upper, seven-level office tower, BakerTriangle installed 3A Composites USA Inc.’s 4-mm-thick ALUCOBOND PLUS metal composite material (MCM) panels with a custom Brushed Manhattan finish. KSC Inc. fabricated the panels in multiple sizes for prefab units and a unitized rainscreen system.
“[The metal panels] visually express a modern aesthetic for the building’s upper volume, while also tying to the industrial history of Deep Ellum,” Robbins-Elrod says.
Preston Pressley, president at BakerTriangle, says panels were produced in prefab units, which eliminated the need for field measurements and field cuts of panels. The prefab units arrived on-site ready to be shaken out and installed by elevation.
“This project required a lot of preplanning; we spent a lot of hours in design.” Pressley says. “We had to create an overlay between architectural drawings and shop drawings, aligning five different trades to correctly coordinate the details.”
The Stack paid homage to the neighborhood’s thriving visual arts scene by commissioning American street artist Tristan Eaton in collaboration with Goldman Global Arts to create the massive “Modern Cowgirl” mural for the building. Local artists in collaboration with The Deep Ellum Foundation decorated an alleyway with a series of united murals recognizing the area’s blues music tradition. A dynamic LED lighting system allows The Stack’s façade lighting to be changed in support of local sports teams and causes.
