Twin Hills Elementary School, Twin Hills, Okla.

Just as the school was set to celebrate its 100th anniversary, a fire devastated the school, destroying the historical masonry and wood structure. The project goals were to rebuild the school to honor the original design on the exterior, but create a 21st century environment on the interior. The team used a clear span pre-engineered metal building from Mesco Building Solutions for flexibility, allowing a safe room to be located within the envelope and at the same time, saved the original building stone for reuse. The new 15,000-square-foot elementary school opened one year after the fire.

The building also features a standing-seam metal roof from Mesco and metal canopies from Mapes Architectural Canopies. The structure is exposed in the corridors above the “clouds” and the metal duct work and electrical conduit becomes part of the learning experience. For historical accuracy, the school superintendent, Bob Pinkston, personally directed the placement of the stone work.
