The new AISC standard for steel bridge fabricator certification is available for free downloading on the AISC web site. Formally titled AISC Certification Program for Steel Bridge Fabricators-Standard for Steel Bridges-2011 (AISC 205-11), the standard outlines three categories of fabricator certification based on three types of bridges: simple, intermediate, and advanced.
The standard also includes requirements for a fracture-critical member certification endorsement. The new standard is the culmination of several years of work by the AISC Certification Committee and its ad hoc bridge standard task group. It is modeled after the format of the AISC certification standard for structural steel building fabricators and the certification standard for bridge component manufacturers. The AISC Certification program expects to incorporate the new standard into its bridge fabricator certification program, replacing the current checklist-based certification program, over the next 24 months.
