Alliiance Architects designed Williston Basin International Airport with a layout and appearance that coordinates with its prairie environment.
Terminals feature extensive views of the prairie. Finish colors on the exterior are a nod to stratified limestone in the Missouri River and the region’s industrial mining. Additionally, the interior reflects Badlands National Park by mimicking limestone with metal, a canyon horizon and rolling prairie grasses.
MG McGrath Inc. installed 55,000 square feet of metal wall panels. At the west, north and south sides of the exterior and interior walls, MG McGrath installed CENTRIA’s MR3-36 EcoScreen Screenwall corrugated metal panels in Allusion Rust. The panels have factoryand shop-mitered corners that wrap window openings and corners of the building.
At the stair enclosures, tapering soffits and an overhang on the east side of the building, MG McGrath installed CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series insulated metal panels (IMPs) with flat and embossed finishes in Silversmith and Dark Bronze. The overhang has a five-step soffit and fascia configuration. Some IMPs were manufactured in parallelogram shapes to maintain vertical joints at sloped fascia.
At the bridge abutments and interior soffits, MG McGrath installed CENTRIA’s CS-200 Concept Series single-skin metal wall panels in Dark Bronze.
At the main entrance, and north and south sides of the building, MG McGrath installed Dri-Design’s anodized aluminum wall panels in a custom Champagne anodized finish.
At the interior window openings and elevator enclosures, MG McGrath installed Dri-Design panels, custom stainless steel trims and fin tube covers.
The MR3-36 panels and Dri-Design’s anodized aluminum panels were installed over Advanced Architectural Products LLC’s thermally broken GreenGirt with a 5-inch insulation depth. MG McGrath supplied thermal girts and mineral wool insulation for the enclosure.
The 110,000-square-foot new airport replaces Sloulin Field International Airport. It has four gates, three passenger boarding bridges, two runways, a restaurant, baggage claim, children’s play area and lounge seating.
