Marmon Mok LLP integrated a map of local roadways in its design for Bexar County’s Public Works Department’s office building. Angel Garcia, AIA, LEED AP, REFP, partner at Marmon Mok, says, “Because the building is a public works building, we utilized an abstracted map of the major county roads as a design motif throughout the building in different applications. The most visible ones can be seen from the river as a shading canopy and on the front of the building as a perforated screen that is illuminated at night. The abstracted map is also featured as a wall mural in the lobby, as adhesive decoration on conference room windows, and through the use of carpet tiles.”

The public works building has a centrally located reception desk and plan-drop on the first floor, where occupants have panoramic river and city views. In addition to the lobby, the building has a boardroom, elevated outdoor patio and private workspaces that flank the lobby on the first and second floors. A centrally located conference center overlooks the lobby, connects work areas on the second floor and has views to the river and landscape of the site.

An executive suite on the second floor has a panoramic view of Concepcion Creek, the city and San Antonio River. At night, perforated metal panels at windows in the executive suite are illuminated, which increases the facility’s visibility in the Mission Reach section of the San Antonio River.

A variety of building materials were used for the 35,000-square-foot project including solid and perforated metal panels, stainless steel mesh, composite wood panels and stone.

Four types of metal wall panels were used to complete the project. Bryrne Metals Corp. fabricated and installed 4,000 square feet of its Metalbond 200 Series 4-mm zinc composite panels and 3,000 square feet of Pure + FreeForm’s 3-mm aluminum plate panels in Perisan Rust. Bryrne Metals also fabricated and installed 800 square feet of Accurate Perforating Co. Inc.’s perforated aluminum panels in Rugged Brown and 800 square feet of Berridge Manufacturing Co.’s 24-gauge FW-12 Panels in Shasta White.

For sunscreens, Industrial Louvers Inc. fabricated, and Champion Glass installed, 756 square feet of Forms and Surfaces Inc.’s stainless steel mesh.
