On a daily basis, about 6,000 commuters and 600 busses pass through Duluth Transportation Center, which has a multilevel parking structure and bicycle parking area. Despite the large volume of traffic during rush hours, buses, cars, bicycles and pedestrians do not cross paths. The transit center is connected to the Duluth Skywalk System with access to Superior Street Business District and the Northwest Passage skywalk, which connects the downtown area to Duluth Entertainment Convention Center across I-35. The project included reconstructing the Northwest Passage skywalk.
Duluth Transportation Center houses a Duluth Police Department substation, charging stations for electric vehicles and parking capacity for 300 cars and 120 bicycles. To provide comfortable air temperatures for commuters and prevent ice build-up, radiant heating was installed in floors, sidewalks, skywalks and at an exterior passenger loading area.
LHB Inc. specified metal wall panels to integrate with the 196,760-square-foot facility’s existing brick exterior. Jamar Co. installed 44,850 square feet of CENTRIA’s IW-10A concealed fastener panels in Midnight Bronze and Crushed Ice with Versacor Elite coating. The project was completed for $30 million in February 2016.
