Both a Window and a Wall

SNAPSHOT

Cambridge Nov18 1 Main

In the shadow of Manhattan’s One World Trade Center, a metal mesh screen wall has done the seemingly impossible: create a single element that functions as both a solid wall and open window. Reflecting both strength and ornate beauty, the Courtyard by Marriott meets New York City zoning and building codes while offering solar shading for hotel guestrooms on the lower floors. New York City-based Danny Forster Design Studio chose Cambridge, Md.-based Cambridge Architectural’s mesh with 50 percent opacity. The ingenious and innovative problem-solving struck the right balance to convince city officials that it was both a wall to meeting zoning law and a window to meet building codes.
