Our July newsletter posed the question, “What do you treasure most about your membership in the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA)?” We offered four responses: access to information and people; training and education; camaraderie and peer networking; and all of the above. Although “all of the above” was the clear winner, “access to information and people” was a close second. Of course, this was a somewhat rigged poll, but it certainly serves to remind us of why we gather as an association.
Local chapters provide the core opportunities for training and networking
There are a few die-hard MBCEA members who think our annual membership dues are too low. There are many who say the value they receive is well worth the investment. For those of you who are not yet members, I would like to share a few thoughts on why our motto is “reaching new heights, together.”
In quite a few regions of the country, we have strong, active MBCEA chapters. Members gather monthly for sharing, learning and networking. These are fabulous forums where friendly competitors, suppliers, manufacturers and erectors come together to share information, tips and techniques. Often these chapter meetings are a valuable source of low-cost training and certifications. Perhaps, more importantly, when we gather together, strong lasting bonds are formed. Our Carolinas chapter regularly offers a training series called Construction Notebook, covering a wide variety of topics critical for quality erections. Their summer meeting is as much a must-attend social event as it is a business meeting. Families look forward to this long weekend in Hilton Head, S.C., where they reconnect with old friends while recharging their business.
MBCEA chapters are known for their free or very low-cost training. In the last 12 months, members had access to topics such as energy codes, COMcheck and air infiltration; heat tracing; core rigging; crane signal safety; emerging safety supervisors and competent persons; Globally Harmonized Systems (GHS); controlled decking zones; equipment training; OSHA 10; first aid and CPR; IMP installation training; blueprint reading and many more. Our Rocky Mountain chapter started an annual clay shoot as an alternative to the standard golf tournament. This event was so popular other chapters now offer a clay shoot as well. Add to all this, the fabulous content available at the national conference and you have a powerhouse of programming.
There is magic that happens when colleagues gather. A tough problem or challenge is often resolved when shared informally. No one wants to be the guy who asks the dumb question, but at a group event or round table, issues can be posed in such a way as to gather a variety of ideas. Often you don’t even have to ask your question because someone else raises a similar issue. Or a supplier casually mentions a solution. Or you meet a new vendor with just the right product you never knew you needed.
The friendships and mentors we gain through chapter and national events are the bonds we need to remain strong as we weather the COVID-19 storm. 2020 is certainly a year like no other. I know my business and I personally are stronger thanks to my active participation in MBCEA. The newsletter, virtual conference, website, training opportunities, educational resources, free access to the Quality and Craftsmanship series, chapter events and so many other resources and great information are essential to my success.
But best of all are the personal connections and camaraderie. If you are not a member or perhaps a former member, please consider joining our group today. You won’t be disappointed.
