2021 Metal Construction Hall of Fame honoree Scott Kriner, 63, passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease on Thursday, Jan. 26, at South Mountain Memory Care in Emmaus, Pa. Kriner spent more than 40 years in the metal construction industry.
In 2004, Kriner formed Green Metal Consulting Inc., Macungie, Pa., where he worked with manufacturers and suppliers of metal roofing and wall systems. A dedicated advocate for the environment and the benefits of building green, Kriner was instrumental in the Metal Construction Association, where he served as technical consultant from 2017-2019. He also played a key role in developing MCA’s environmental product declarations and served as the founding chairman of the Cool Metal Roof Coalition.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering and a masters of Engineering, both from Lehigh University, Kriner started his career in 1981 with Bethlehem Steel Corp. in the metallurgical department at Homer Research Laboratories. From there, he was hired by BIEC International Inc., an affiliate of Bethlehem Steel, to promote and support Galvalume. Kriner went on to be the technical marketing manager of building products for AkzoNobel Coatings Inc., providing background on paints and coatings on metal substrates. In 2002, Kriner was named as an inventor of a patent with Erin McDevitt, “Coating Composition For Steel Product, A Coated Steel Product, And A Steel Product Coating Method.”
At this year’s MCA winter meeting, Kriner was awarded the Larry A. Swaney Award, which is bestowed upon an outstanding industry professional for their contributions to the success of the association and the betterment of the metal construction industry.
“To say that Scott’s role in advancing the metal construction industry is indispensable is an understatement. His achievements and the success of the metal construction industry are one and the same. His vision and hard work helped bring MCA to the forefront and make our industry stronger. His memory and legacy will live on through those of us who knew him and through the Metal Construction Association’s commitment to furthering his work,” said Brian Partyka, MCA Chair.
Kriner was also an active member of Jordan United Church of Christ in Allentown, and served two terms as president of the consistory and was the festival committee chairman for 20 years. A hardworking and loyal man, he was a member of the Family Promise committee in the Lehigh Valley, a program that supports homeless families through various churches. Kriner was also dedicated to raising funds to help fight Alzheimer’s.
Kriner is survived by his wife of 36 years, Natalie R. “Lee Ann” (Ryba) Kriner; his sons Matthew S. Kriner (Alyson), and Andrew J. Kriner (Allyssa); his sister Kelly S. Moneymaker (Steven); grandchildren Owen Matthew Kriner, Gavin Scott Kriner, and Mia LaRue Kriner; nephew, Nathaniel S. Moneymaker; and niece Stephanie S. Moneymaker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 at Jordan United Church of Christ in Allentown, Pa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jordan U.C.C.
